Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

It's nice knowing that I am a third of the way through my biology course. Three hours a day is pretty intense, especially when talking about evolution the entire time. At least we do get breaks! That is how I am able to write this quick blog.

The weather has been quite ridiculous here. Spokane has made the national news several times in the past couple weeks. When I arrived back to school, I was surround by four-feet of snow. We just had a little path in our drive way in order to get to the house. Half of the snow has melted, but it seems like it could just dump some more any moment.

A school in NYC will also call me this week expressing my interest in their summer acting program. It is called SFT, meaning school for film and television. It is a smaller school on the east coast, but one of the big names from the school is Matthew Fox (Jack from LOST). Even if I won't do the summer program this upcoming summer, it will be nice to know what is out there. I'm so excited to get into this new field of study and fully pursue this new world. Updates will happen of course!

Water Aerobics and Evolution.

Let's just say, I'm never making fun of all those old ladies at the public pools. I'm currently taking two course during Jan-term. Evolutionary Biology and Water Aerobics.

I have never had a good teacher in the subject of science, so it is nice to have a refreshing look into science. It is a very interesting class discussing evolution in all it's forms and theories. Currently, we are discovering different religious ideas with evolution. There is this girl in my small discussion group that reads the bible very literal. I never actually met or argued with someone that is that literal with the bible. She doesn't believe there should be women pastors and she also believes that the Earth is 6,000 years old. It turns out she dropped the class yesterday. It is unfortunate that she wouldn't be able to back up her faith even more by learning all the details about evolution. It seems like quite a few Christians are ignorant to the world around them by not even take the step to understand why people believe what they believe, instead, they just drop the class.

Water Aerobics is intense. Sums it up in one word. I feel rather ridiculous running around in shallow water doing all these different exercises that look really foolish. My back is sore, my calves burn, my pecs hurt, but it feels great! This will be the most intense three weeks with science and working out in the water everyday. So I decided to set a goal and head to bed by 11pm each school night. Actually, I have gone to bed at 10pm already this week. Water Aerobics wears you out!

So please don't judge people that are evolutionists or water aerobic extraordinaires unless you have already dived into the depths of each.

A Story.

Once upon a time there was an old woman who used to meditate on the bank of the Ganges. One morning, finishing her meditation, she saw a scorpion floating helplessly in the strong current. As the scorpion was pulled closer, it got caught in roots that branched out far into the river. The scorpion struggled frantically to free itself but got more and more entangled. She immediately reached out to the drowning scorpion, which, as soon as she touched it, stung her. The old woman withdrew her hand but, having regained her balance, once again tried to save the creature. Every time she tried, however, the scorpion's tail stung her so badly that her hands became bloody and her face distorted with pain. A passerby who saw the old woman struggling with the scorpion shouted, "What's wrong with you, fool! Do you want to kill yourself to save that ugly thing?" Looking into the stranger's eyes, she answered, "Because it is the nature of the scorpion to sting, why should I deny my own nature to save it?"

Reading a book for evolutionary biology called 'The Language of God'. I never thought I would enjoy a biology class this much.

Theatre Major.

I did it. I switched to a theatre major. I will be theatre performance once I get it approved. I'm not doing away with music, I'll will still keep a music minor. People ask, "Why the sudden switch?" A simple answer could be that it just feels right. I find my joy in theatre. It is amazing the joy that it brings.

Tonight I have the first of two performances of 'Beauty and the Lonely Beast', the second performance is tomorrow. It is a children's musical directed by a senior for her final project. I am playing Beast. It is a great role to stretch my abilities and be someone I am not like at all. He is an interesting character because it seems like his has four different moods. The angry beast, the lonely beast, the happy beast and the charm of a prince. It's fun working with a lot of facial expressions. I might post some pictures soon.

The two one acts I am in are more of the adult version plays this year. "Opposites Attract" by Bruce Kane is an abstract performance in which just about everyone has to play three different characters. The theme of this one act is that people want each other and the way they tend to fill the need is through sex. Interesting dialogue and scenarios. That will be performed Dec. 2nd.

The second one is called 'Life Under Water' by Richard Greenberg. An interesting story where my relationship with my mother is not the greatest. I end up running away staying with two girls down the shore and getting to know each of them, but feel terrible after sleeping with one of them, then eventually the other. I end up finding comfort at home with my mother after all. Will be performed Dec. 4th.

It is quite an interesting shift from the Sterling theatre. More risque plays can be done here. Sex, Alcohol, Cursing is all accepted at Whitworth. In 'Life Under Water', it calls for me to walk nude across the stage, but that's the one thing Whitworth won't allow. I was totally for it, it will stretch me as an actor, but I guess we will improvise. If I didn't make the switch to Whitworth, I don't know where I would be and what I would be doing.

I found joy.

The Cradle Will Rock.

The fall musical this year has a huge cast and is already underway. We had our first rehearsal yesterday and will be set to perform two weekends in October. I believe we will be doing a total of six shows. There was a movie released about 10 years ago about how the play came to be and why it was so controversial.

It seems that everyone involved with theatre or has a slight interest should check out this show or the movie. It was a giant stepping stone for theatre in the 1930s and we probably wouldn't have the quality of theatre we would have now if it wasn't for Marc Blitzstein. I was casted the roll of 'Steve' and also casted as a member of the chorus. He is a young adult that helps out with his father's drugstore, but tends to be more realistic with the events that are happening around him while his father is the idealist. It is a small role, but seems to be a great one that will help improve my awareness in this new world of theatre. It shall be exciting. I might even be looking into several auditions that are in downtown Spokane. 'Urinetown' is coming through along with Sondheims 'A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum'. Thank you Spokane for being a city.
